What is Empowerment, Anyway?

Do you feel that things in your life happen to you, or are you actively creating the life you want?

For me it was always a mixed bag. Some things I absolutely created with awareness, like making a choice at the age of 24 to immigrate to Australia on my own, leaving my family, friends and the life I had behind (well, being madly in love had something to do with it), but some things I wasn't necessarily able to explain. Like, how come the burden of the whole world was on my shoulders, or how come I seemed to have understood everyone but no one understood me.

The bigger question I had was - how do I create what I want?

Not knowing the answer, made me feel disempowered!

So many of us feel disempowered in some places in our lives, but don't understand why.

The antidot of disempowerment is empowerment.

And if empowerment is: the authority given to someone to do something, self-empowerment is being the one who gives you the permission!

What Self-empowerment is NOT?

  • Blaming, shaming, complaining - especially when it is directed at yourself

  • Self-sacrificing - because you feel that if you won't do it, nobody else will

  • Waiting for other's approval - to feel worthy

  • Over-working, over-giving, over-worrying - anything 'over', really!

  • Shutting down in the face of adversity

  • Feeling victimised

Learning how to empower ourselves is critical to us achieving our goals, be it losing weight, feeling fulfilled at work, happy at home, or just feeling like the best version of ourselves more often than not.
